What is a standing seam metal roof?
Standing seam metal roofs are the highest quality metal roofs available. There are two main types of metal roofs; standing seam and exposed faster. A standing seam metal roof differs from an exposed faster metal roof because all of the fasteners are hidden.
Standing seam metal roofs use hidden hardware on the vertical leg of each panel to attach the panel to the roof substrate. Like the name implies, exposed fastener metal roofs use fasteners on the face of each panel to attach the panel to the roof deck. The screws penetrate the each roof panel which is main issue with exposed fastener metal roofs.
Each penetration into the metal becomes a potential failure point. Though the screws used on exposed fastener roofs have a neoprene washer to prevent water entering the penetrations, the washers are prone to failure and need to be maintained.
By hiding the fasteners beneath the panel and seaming the panels together, standing seam metal roofs can achieve a puncture less surface that is far less likely.
