Three Roofing Elements to Not Forget in Park City

Heat Cable, Snow Retention, & Gutters

The final elements of a quality roof system are heat cable, snow retention, & gutters. These elements work in conjunction to form a snow retention system that prevents ice dams, icicles, and rooftop avalanches.

A roof without the proper snow retention system can have leaks and failures occur throughout the life of a home. Let’s take a quick look at each component.

Snow Retention

Snow retention like the name implies retains snow on a homes roof to prevent it from sheeting off. By breaking up a homes roof surface into smaller sections that are divided by snow bar or snow retention clips, it prevents large quantities of snow from sliding off your roof at once.

This is important because large quantities of snow falling from a tall roof can be dangerous and even fatal.

Snow retention also ensure that the heat cable that is installed on your home doesn’t get ripped off by large areas of snow sheeting from your roof.

Heat Cable

Below the last row of snow retention, you want to install heat cable if you have ice dam or icicle issues. Heat cable will melt any ice on the eave of your roof and prevent large ice dams from forming.

Once the heat cable melts the snow off the edge of your roof, you need a way to direct the water down to the ground, this is where gutters come into play.

Gutters

Gutters are an essential part of a roofing system to direct direct water from your roof down to ground. By having gutter installed below your snow retention and heat cable, you eliminate the possibility of ice forming on the edge of your roof.

Together all three elements, snow retention, heat cable, and gutter work in conjunction to prevent ice dams, icicles and keep you home safe and protect from rooftop avalanches.
