What is snow retention?

As the name implies, snow retention system are made to retain snow on a homes roof. Why do we want to retain snow on a homes roof though? For many homes, snow retention will be installed to prevent large amounts of snow and ice from falling from a homes roof all at once. This can be very dangerous for homeowners, delivery drivers and anyone who is in contact with your home in the winter.

Snow retention comes in a few forms but generally it’s in the form of snow bar or snow retention clips.

Do I need Snow Retention on My Roof?

There are a few things that will determine whether or not your need snow retention. The first is your roofing material and roof pitch. Metal roofs will usually require snow retention because snow easily sheets off of metal. For shingle roofs, it’s mostly going to depend on the roof pitch. Many shingle roofs will not require snow retention because snow doesn’t sheet off of shingles very easily.

If your metal roof is very pitched, it likely will not require snow retention because snow will sheet off before it can build up.

Where Should I Install Snow Retention?

You want to install snow retention anywhere that people have access to that can be a potential danger area. That means above garages, entrances, and walkways that are directly beneath a roof that is pitched in its direction. You want to have sufficient snow retention installed so that no section is ever overloaded by that amount of snow that is being held up. If enough snow retention isn’t installed, it can lead to snow retention systems being torn off of a rough.
